Vertiss Plus — Professional living wall system for landscapers and installers, indoors and outdoors

VERTISS PLUS

The Vertiss Plus module is a modular vertical growing system designed specifically for landscape contractors, professional installers and architects looking to integrate a reliable living wall solution into their projects. It enables the greening of any vertical surface — from small indoor installations to large-scale building green facades spanning several hundred square metres — using real living plants, a specialised vertical growing medium and an automated drip fertigation system.

Designed and manufactured in France by Novintiss, the Vertiss Plus module is suitable for all climatic conditions and compatible with new build and renovation projects, indoors and outdoors.

A module engineered for on-site performance

The Vertiss Plus module is manufactured in high-density expanded polypropylene (EPP). This material was chosen for its specific properties in vertical growing environments: corrosion resistance, tolerance to extreme temperatures, light weight and long-term mechanical stability.

The module effectively protects the growing medium and root systems from thermal variations, reducing plant stress during acclimatisation and ensuring rapid establishment after planting.

The 16 planting cells are angled to respect the natural phototropism and geotropism of plants. This means less stress for the plants, faster establishment after installation, and easier access during maintenance visits. Individual plant replacement can be carried out without removing the entire module.

The absence of internal partitions between cells is a deliberate technical choice: the 32 litres of growing medium are shared across all 16 plants, promoting uniform root development, better water and nutrient circulation, and reducing the risk of dry patches. This architecture also makes it easy to achieve a mosaic or plant fresco effect across large surfaces, by combining different species and textures.

Specialised vertical growing medium: technical formulation

The Vertiss Plus growing medium is developed specifically for vertical growing conditions. Its formulation addresses the constraints inherent to living wall systems: settlement under gravity, significant humidity variations, and the need for rapid drainage without drying out the root zone.

Composition and properties

Pumice stone and expanded clay ensure root anchorage and provide effective aeration and drainage, even under temporary saturation. The organic matter (peat) provides baseline water retention and supports good plant establishment. Water-retaining polymers, capable of holding up to 300 times their weight in water, regulate available moisture between irrigation cycles and reduce the system's overall water consumption.

Technical advantages for installers

This growing medium offers the following properties, which are particularly important for ensuring the long-term performance of a living wall system:

  • Excellent root development thanks to high porosity and resistance to compaction

  • Anti-compaction properties: no root asphyxiation even after several growing seasons

  • Sustained microbial activity maintained through structural porosity

  • High CEC (cation exchange capacity) for good nutrient availability

  • Frost resistance for outdoor installations in cold climates

  • Delivered free from disease, fungi, weeds and insects

Supporting structure: metallic rainscreen cladding system

The Vertiss Plus system is mounted on a metallic load-bearing structure based on rainscreen cladding principles. This solution is compatible with all existing support types — concrete, brick, metal, timber — in both new build and renovation contexts. Module layout planning is straightforward and rapid, simplifying project preparation and reducing on-site installation time.

The structure also provides protection for the existing wall against UV exposure and weathering. It does not form part of the building's waterproofing layer but contributes to thermal insulation through plant evapotranspiration combined with the EPP module properties.

Automated irrigation: integrated drip fertigation system

Irrigation network architecture

The Vertiss irrigation system operates on a two-network drip fertigation principle. The primary network forms the technical hub of the living wall: it integrates the programmer, solenoid valves, filters and nutrient dosing pump (Dosatron or Dosmatic type). It automatically controls irrigation frequency, duration and nutrient dosing.

The secondary network provides localised micro-irrigation to each module via drip lines. Each line is positioned along the upper part of the module, spaced approximately every 80 cm. Water then spreads through the entire growing medium by capillary action and gravity, ensuring uniform moisture distribution.

Irrigation network architecture

  • Average water consumption: 5 to 15 litres/week/sq.m depending on season — approximately 200 to 500 litres/year/sq.m

  • Recommended irrigation: short (2 to 5 minutes) and frequent (1 to 5 times per day depending on season and region)

  • This programming allows water to move slowly through the module, be absorbed effectively by the growing medium, and minimises wastage and run-off at the base of the wall

The irrigation equipment is not included in the standard Vertiss Plus package (module + growing medium + structure) but is available as an option and can be specified on request according to the project surface area and installation configuration.

Lighting for indoor living walls

The necessary parts for the watering system of the vertical garden are not part of the Vertiss + package (module + growing medium + mounting structure) but can be supplied as an option.

Depending on the project and the size of the green wall we can quote an automated and complete drip watering system

It is not possible to install an automated irrigation system on a small vertical garden made of few modules only.

Automation of the irrigation provides regular and homogenous water and nutrients supply to the plants and avoids omissions or over-watering.

For any indoor living wall installation, light intensity is a critical parameter. The minimum recommended light level is 1,500 lux for shade and semi-shade species. Below this threshold, photosynthesis cannot function correctly, leading to progressive plant decline.

A lighting assessment is recommended for every indoor project prior to installation. If available natural light is insufficient, supplementary artificial lighting must be specified and integrated into the project from the design stage. Both insufficient and excessive light can be damaging to indoor plants: lighting optimisation is therefore a core element of the ongoing technical management of any indoor living wall.
